Event Details
Perry County Council of the Arts will dedicate its latest Arts-in-Education historical mural on July 8, as part of the Newport Food Truck Festival and Community Yard Sale on Saturday. The mural dedication event will take place at the site, at 105 Market Street in Newport, at 1 p.m. The short ceremony will include a citation in honor of PCCA’s 35th anniversary, to be presented by Rep. Mark Keller, as well as a presentation on Newport’s most recently completed historical markers.
The Newport Veterans Mural is a co-creation of a Newport High School art class and visiting artist in residence Jon Laidacker of Philadelphia, with the support of art teacher Jessica Barlup and high school staff and administration. PCCA is an Arts-in-Education Partner of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Nearly 100 community members of all ages also helped paint the mural during Youth Art Day in 2017.
PCCA thanks the generous financial supporters of the Veterans Mural project—Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, VFW Post 34 of Newport, Newport American Legion Post 177, and The Lotus Fund, a fund of the Perry County Community Foundation, a regional foundation of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, on behalf of Meredith and Matthew Schuler.
The Newport Food Truck Festival and Community Yard Sale will kick off with yard sales beginning at 7 a.m., with both residences and businesses participating. Starting at 9 a.m., join PCCA’s sidewalk chalk crew to (temporarily) decorate the sidewalks, starting in front of PCCA Gallery. Dress to get messy—chalk will be provided and parental supervision is required. Then from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Newport Planning Commission will host a Food Truck Festival on Penn Ave.
During open hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., shop a 15 percent of sale at PCCA Gallery on applicable artwork and handmade goods. Visit “Discover Newport, PA” on Facebook for more details on the event.
