The Perry County Council of the Arts, founded in 1979, is a rural grassroots success story with an influence that extends far beyond the borders implied by its name. In its first 20 years, PCCA cultivated and promoted a growing, then thriving, arts culture in the area. Eventually, as the reputation and capacity of PCCA grew, opportunities to expand its offerings to a wider audience presented themselves, and today PCCA has matured into an organization that fulfills its mission through five interconnected and mutually supportive endeavors.
The PCCA Gallery, in Newport, is the most visible manifestation of PCCA’s support for many established and emerging artists in the region. Over 150 member artists, 60% of whom live outside of Perry County, are showcased at the Gallery at any given time.
The RT15 ByWay of the Arts is a string of artists, artisans, galleries, and studios, B&Bs, wineries, and unique eateries that extend 180 miles from Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry Counties in the south to Lycoming County in the North.
In 2003 the Perry County Council of the Arts was named as one of the PA Council on the Arts’ 12 regional Partners, with the responsibility of implementing Arts-In-Education programs in 6 counties – Perry, Juniata, Mifflin, Snyder, Union, and Northumberland – and 15 school districts.
PCCA builds community, nurtures artists, and honors acts of creativity by supporting numerous Arts-Related Groups and Events, most free to the public.
Landis House, our “Creative Commons” in Newport, was bequeathed to PCCA in 2007 by Mary M. Landis, a longtime supporter of PCCA. Its mission is to celebrate acts of creativity in their many forms and include the works of accomplished as well as emerging artists.
