Patricia Koscienksi, Oil Painter

Artist's Statement

Painting is a language that artists use to communicate a moment of life on canvas.  It is a language we learn; and only through constant practice can we learn to speak it well.  By using this unique language, one can often say things that are impossible with words.

When painting, I look for a subject that speaks to me visually and emotionally.  I strive to capture and communicate to the viewer, just a fraction of what I see and feel, whether it be the light bouncing through a section of woods or the sadness in a subject’s eyes.

I also enjoy the challenges of various subjects and mediums. Whether it be oil or pastel, I want the viewer to experience the use of the medium…the color, the strokes, the spontaneity.  I want the viewer to see and feel what I felt at that particular time.  If I come even close to this goal, I will feel I have accomplished something of worth.

Biography

Patricia Koscienski was born in western Pennsylvania as a coal miner’s daughter, and has been a long-time resident of Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.  Her interest in art began after nurses’ training with a portrait class in New York.  Marriage, family, and formal education became her main drive over the next several years, although art in some form always remained a part of her life.  Finally, her fine art education truly came with a vengeance about 14 years ago.  Studying under many local artists at the Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, and York Art Associations, as well as HACC and Penn State University has given Pat the ability to be eclectic in her technique and use of mediums; oil and pastel being her mediums of choice.  Her favorite subjects are landscapes, portraits, wildlife, pets, and still life.  Her works are featured throughout America and Germany.  Pat’s main goal is to show a variety of life’s vignettes through an artist’s eye.
