Jason Blandford, Glass Artist

In the beginning I thought art was all about representing reality within exact replication.   The realm of which art “is” is not even close to fathomable.  Art or the act of art making cannot be defined with right or wrong answers, but each individual perception adds to an ever growing idea of what “art” is.

I am a recent graduate from New York College of Ceramics in Alfred University School of Art and Design.  I gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts.  I concentrated within Glass Sculpture and Printmaking.  While in school I focused in a two-dimensional driven design, and a three-dimensional design so I could experiment with the combinations of the two and think of how two-dimensional can become three-dimensional and visa versa.  I always thought it would be a great idea to know form and function of a physical object(the third dimension),  in order to thus replicate a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional plain.

My most recent work deals with how layers create environment, or how surface is made up of a multitude of layers.  I started by introducing a two-dimensional material to a three-dimensional surface through the use of Xerox copies and Modge Podge.  The Xerox copies are of scanned in drawings and prints that have been manipulated in Photoshop. The Blown Glass is simplistic within form.  The use of pattern through repetition creates and even more articulate canvas for the eye.

This past summer I had the chance to live and work at the Pilchuck Glass.  Pilchuck was founded in 1971 by Dale Chihuly, Anne Gould Hauberg, and John H. Hauberg (1916-2002), Pilchuck Glass School is an international center for glass art education. Located on a former tree farm near Stanwood, Washington, Pilchuck sponsors three-week classes each summer in a broad spectrum of glass techniques as well as residencies for emerging and established artists working in all media. I worked as a Cook.  On my free time I was able to able to go to artist lectures and observe class demonstrations.  Every Sunday we would partner up with another staff member and help each other make our own personal work as well.
I am currently established in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania living and working, and always making.
