Ron Barrick, Photographer
Artist's Statement
A photograph is a captured memory.
My memories are never distinct. They have soft edges and a warm glow, with a diffused lighting that trails off to darkness around the periphery.
My photographs exhibit these same qualities.
This look is achieved not just at the time the image is captured, but also in the printing process. Ink and paper have been carefully chosen to promote a certain feeling. My final prints portray the subject as it appears in my memory- which sometimes can be far different than the original scene. Indeed, my work has been described as moody, but to me I am merely portraying the world as I perceive it.
Years ago, long before taking my first photograph, I was greatly influenced by the Impressionist masters. Studying their works, I formed an early opinion as to how art should represent the real world. That foundation has since continued to influence my artistic viewpoint and photographic technique.
Today, I strive to present the viewer with a glimpse into my thoughts as I attempt to capture the very essence of a particular moment. My hope is that my photographs offer not only an artful diversion, but that they offer intellectual stimulation as well.
Biography
Ron Barrick is an accomplished photographer who has been capturing the world around him for over thirty years. A former head photographer for the Carlisle Sentinel newspaper, he has recently started to release selected fine art images from his personal archives. With the advent of digital photography and archival processing, he is finally able to achieve the artistic expression to which he has long aspired.
A lifelong resident of the Carlisle, Pennsylvania area, Ron attended Point Park University in Pittsburgh, majoring in journalism. His first introduction to photography came when he was hired by the Carlisle Sentinel as a reporter.
The Sentinel had a policy that all reporters be given a camera and be trained to take their own photographs. Ron was immediately smitten by the photographic process, and immersed himself in the art. Recognizing his skills, the Sentinel soon promoted him to head photographer.
Several years later, family demands led Ron to a career change, but he continued to pursue his passion for photography. Currently, he is the Information Technology Manager for a large automotive group. He and his wife Ruth enjoy traveling as often as time and money permit, primarily to Europe and the western United States.
Ron is a member of many local art associations and enjoys showing his work at every opportunity, including participation in area juried shows.
As a result of his background in photojournalism, Ron carries a camera with him at all times in order to capture life’s “golden moments”- those photographic opportunities that present themselves unannounced. Such spontaneous moments are an essential part of his artistic expression.
