About your instructor: Hannah Smolensky – Owlfeathers Watercolor

Hannah Smolensky is the creator of Owlfeathers Watercolor, which she founded in 2014 while a junior in highschool. By 2017 she was selling her art and teaching classes in her hometown. After graduating from college, she put her artwork on pause to become a history teacher, and then an archivist, only to find herself looking to return to painting, attending art shows, and teaching watercolor workshops again.

Hannah’s Artist Statement:

The name Owlfeathers comes from a pseudonym I created for myself in 8th grade, which I used to write notes of encouragement to my teachers and classmates. Owlfeathers represents the person I am when I am my best self. Someone who tries to live according to the Bible’s teachings, and love others the way Jesus loves me. The colors and joy that comes out through my art represents the joy I have in my heart, knowing that I am known and loved by God, who has blessed me enormously in so many areas of my life.

🌺 Unleash Your Creativity with Botanical Printing! 🌿

Discover various native plants, tools of the trade, and techniques in our workshop, then dive in and create personalized prints on paper and fabric! Students will walk away from Sue’s Botanical Printing workshop having created their own bandana!
About your instructor: Sue Hetrick

Sue Hetrick is an experienced botanical print and natural dye artist whose creative journey began in 2010 as a Crafts Marketing Major at Harrisburg Area Community College.

With a deep-rooted passion for the arts, Sue initially explored the realms of clay and glass, skills that continue to shape her artistic identity. However, it was during the challenges of the Covid lockdown that she found a new avenue for expression through botanical printing and dyeing.

Nestled on 22 acres of serene Perry County woodlands, Sue began a transformative period in her artistic practice. Focusing on extracting a blue pigment from the Cotinus plant, also known as Smoke Bush, she delved into the world of botanical printing; a medium that involves the transfer of plant colors and their patterns onto paper and fabric. Sue utilizes native plant varieties in her work, allowing the intricate process to unfold naturally, with the aid of elements such as heat, humidity, mordants, and tannins.
